An Isolated Incident – Emily Maguire

A sister is struck with grief and a journalist finds her way after the brutal small-town murder of a local woman.

This is one of the books I picked up at Adelaide Writers’ Week after hearing the author speak, and I’m glad I did. It is emotional and heart-wrenching, but it is told with such style and grace that I found myself compelled to keep reading. Yes, it’s a murder mystery, but that’s not the heart of this book. The real stories are those of Chris, the older sister struggling to cope with the grief of losing her best friend and steadying influence on her life, and May, the journalist sent down to cover the story only to find there’s a whole lot more to sensationalised reporting than she ever thought. Both of these women, from different angles, tell the story of the effects of violence on those left behind. An excellent, character-driven story that I suspect will stay with me for a while yet.
